Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. This includes on-site energy like natural gas and fuel, refrigerants, and emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, hot water tanks and furnaces. Scope 1 also includes emissions from vehicles (e. g. cars, vans, trucks, helicopters for hospitals) and emissions released during industrial processes and on-site manufacturing (e.g., factory fumes, chemicals)
Scope 2 emissions are the indirect emissions from use of energy sources that are not renewable, such as gas or coal fired power plants.
Scope 3 emissions are indirectly generated through activities such as travel, waste disposal, contractor vehicles, production of purchased materials, purchased activities, supply chain of purchased materials.
A circular economy is one where products are designed and manufactured to last longer, communities share resources and save money, and businesses maintain, redesign, reuse, remanufacture and recycle materials to create more value now and for future generations.
Sustainability in the context of the circular economy is focused on the environmental aspects, with the dominant issues of climate change, loss of biodiversity, loss of ecosystem services, land degradation, and both air and water pollution. Sustainable practices are those that minimize or eliminate environmental impact, while still meeting the needs of humanity. Each decision made personally and for business can have sustainability as part of its core.
